Charging a car battery may seem straight forward at first, but there are a few important considerations to make that will make the charging process easier and extend the lifespan of the battery itself.
- When charging a battery remember that the energy put into the battery should be used immediately. Without doing this the battery will begin to sulfate which can affect its performance and longevity.
- All car batteries are attached to an alternator. This charges the battery and works best if the battery is not deeply discharged. The alternator also tends to overcharge batteries that are very low and the overcharge can damage batteries.
- Batteries are best charged by a 3 step regulated process. Only smart chargers are able to carry out this charging process, but it allows the battery to be charged to a more complete level than using standard charging methods.
- An engine starting battery has approximately 10 deep cycles available when recharged by an alternator.
